Happy Fall Break! 🍂

We survived the First Quarter of 5th Grade!  We were able to complete our Division lesson in Math, as well as get a good chunk of the way into our Writing Explanatory text. We completed our assessments about our Explorers and were still able to enjoy our first field trip to a musical production about the Royal School for the children of the last Ali'i of Hawaii!

Monday was Custodian Appreciation, and we were able to show our appreciation to our custodians today! We are so grateful for all they do and how hard they work to make our school a better, more beautiful, cleaner place!

Homework Over the Break:
  • RAP (they should be reading an award-winning book) - due on Oct. 30
  • Sign SPIN/ Planner/ Reading Log
  • Completing ALL Missing Assignments (check Class Dojo for the link to view your child's missing assignments)
  • OPTIONAL Online Homework - if your child completes online homework during the week off (in addition to whatever missing assignments) they will earn extra points when they return to school!

When we return from break, be expecting a bunch of tests and projects coming home to be signed! 😬 This is because we had some friends who were absent, and needed some extra time to catch up on their tests. Please return those ASAP, as they will need to be added into your child's Progressfolios that will be coming home at the end of the month with their Report Card.

Wishing you a happy and safe Fall Break! 🍁

ONE. MORE. WEEK!

Sign ups for Parent Teacher Conferences have been sent out! Please make sure that you sign up for a 15 minute block of time. Most importantly, your child will have a portion of the conference that they will need to present to you! Please make sure they are present for their conference! You can find the link to sign up in your Class Dojo Messages!

We have finished up our Multiplication, and moved on to Division this week in Math. We are practicing our reading strategies of making connections, asking questions, making inferences, and identifying important ideas! We have also started learning about different Explorers, and the reasons why they explored in Social Studies.

We have only one week left of the quarter! Please encourage your child to finish strong!

Snapshots of Native Americans

This week we were able to take our school pictures, as well as start our lessons about multiplying multi-digit numbers in Math! In Language Arts, we started learning about the importance of having a topic sentence, as well as a planned sentence when organizing our Writing. We have completed our first presentations of how the geographic features in various regions affected the Native American tribes and their cultural elements.

We also have only one more week to complete our RAPs! We went to the Library to get our RAP books this week. Please encourage your child to complete their RAP so that they can participate in our Activity Day on the last day of the quarter!

"Volumes" of Learning

This week we have been working really hard as we have been learning new things and making connections between those new learnings and what we have learned before! In Math, we've been taking what we learned about how to find volume, and using that to find the volume of composite figures! Check out the example we did together as a class below! In ELA, we took what we learned about sequencing and rereading to complete our first Reading Literature unit! We practiced using context clues and identifying parts of realistic fiction.

We have also just started our Social Studies, where we get to learn about Native Americans and the regions they lived in! This week we focused on how the geographic features of various regions have affected the cultural elements of the tribes of that region. You can see one example that we completed below!

So basically... lots of exciting stuff! Thank you to everyone who helped with the Papa John's Fundraiser and turned in your child's field trip forms! Looking forward to even more learning!

Out of this World!

Even with a four day week, we had quite the busy one! In math we completed our second lesson for more of a variety of how to find volume of rectangular prisms. In ELA, we read more about realistic fiction and used our strategies like sequencing to find out how to get the things we need.

The highlight of the week was our science culminating activity - the Egg Drop! The class was supposed to design a prototype for a safe emergency landing. They needed to use what we have learned about gravity, and more specifically how air resistance counteracts gravity, to help their astronaut egg land safely. Be sure to check out Class Dojo for pics and videos of all the fun!

Jumping Into Content

We officially started our curriculum, and for some of our friends, it was a little more difficult of a transition (apparently all the warnings weren't enough of a heads up)! However, we've already been learning a lot!

In Math we've started learning how to find volume. In ELA, we are practicing sequencing, and context clues as we learn more vocabulary! In Science we learned more about the Earth's gravitational pull on objects.

Looking ahead, we have a monthly reading program that our PTO puts on. In Grade 5, the monthly RAP is required to encourage our students to read more of a variety of genres and talk about what they read with you, their families! The theme for this month is Biographies! Start looking for a book!

Just like Da Vinci!

I'm sure you've read in your child's SPIN that we've been working on a lot of different types of art! We finally completed our self-portraits, and they now hang proudly in our classroom! 🤩 To add to the portraits, we also completed cinquains - 5 lined poems that tell you more about your child! Be sure to check out Class Dojo for the photo of your child with their own mounted self-portrait and cinquain!

And looking ahead - this coming week is the start of our curriculum! Fasten those seat belts... we're in for a wild ride! 😉

Testing, Testing, TESTING!

We finally completed our diagnostic testing... and we SURVIVED!!! 😅

We took our iReady Reading Diagnostic, our iReady Math Diagnostic, our KidBiz Level Set, and our Xtra Math Placement Quizzes! This was to help us know where we are starting, as we prepare for our grade level content.

We also took the diagnostic reports and did a data chat to set some SMART goals to help us improve in a specific domain. Looking forward to the growth that will happen this year!

Happy Aloha Friday!

We survived a very busy week! We mostly spent time getting to know each other and learning about the expectations and routines of 5th Grade, and of B1 specifically. We got to do some group work about our PLC Agreements, and practiced effective communication in various ways. We also got to experience our first Activity Day because everyone earned the necessary points to participate!

Ready or Not, Here We Come!

I'm so excited to have your child in my class this year! I have spent the last couple of months preparing for your child to return to school again! Through all the meetings I've been attending, our school and grade level have been working hard to prepare for your child's successful return! As you prepare for your child coming to school, please keep the following things in mind:
  • Please be sure to screen your child for any sick symptoms before sending them to school. The health and safety of all of us is of my utmost concern!
  • WE NEED YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT! Your child will need help transitioning back to school from summer! Your support, especially in the beginning can start our school year right!
  • There are many VITAL and important forms that your child will need to sign in the beginning of the school year to be prepared for this coming year. Please keep an eye out for them, and ensure that these forms are signed and returned as soon as possible!
  • I promise, we really do use all the supplies we requested on the supplies list! Please try to have your child bring their LABELED supplies ASAP (preferably by the first day of school).
  • There are multiple ways to contact me:
    • My main form of communication will be through Class Dojo! Please be sure you download the app on your phone. You will be receiving the code directly for your child.
    • You also have my email here on this site! Feel free to email me, and I will try to respond within 24 hours.
    • This website will be updated at least once a week with what we have been working on, and important information! Be sure to check it often.
    • Your child in 5th Grade will be writing daily reflections (SPIN) about their progress and growth. Please be sure to read them. We are asking that you respond DAILY to their SPIN entries.

Please continue to be careful and stay healthy! Looking forward to seeing you at our Meet & Greet ON THURSDAY!!
