Overview of i-Ready program. Learn how to support students at home using i-Ready

thanks for joining us today likely to mention it will be an i-Ready parent overview so I'm sure a lot of you have gotten some exposure to what most of it came with that first test at home you were feeling when your child was taking the test and feel free to ask questions and then and then this is going to go into the next section in terms of next steps and how you can help me on just the testing my contact information is there on my phone number as well as my email address one thing as all of us are getting used to this at home distance learning for me myself curriculum Associates a company that I work for support about 200 schools across the state so one thing that has been kind of a different thing for me compared to other years is that I've been able to talk to a lot more parents than I have had in the past so feel free I mean if the question comes up later on or when your child's on the program feel free to reach out to me and I'll be more than happy to support you set alarm like I said you probably had a little exposure what I ready is like Linda said I already is a program that your school uses and basically it's a program that's really designed to Pina each of the students that attend Moanalua Middle that where they are terms of strengths and weaknesses in math and reading so it's very personalized in terms of the testis students take and then what it does it provides your teachers with next steps it gives them information on each of the students in their classes and teacher can do the next step same in planning for what your child needs and the one great thing is that the i-Ready test is not a test that you just take in the beginning of the year your students taken in the middle and basically you're that data to determine what kind of growth and progress is is occurring not only at the end of the year the year since we we have this distance learning Iron Man you become of your child teacher because you're monitoring as well so are you you are a big part of this and like I said in today session we're really going to focus in on some action. steps for you that so that you can assist your teacher your child teacher in terms of playing that role which is which is a bigger role than ever before so the two things you need to remember about IRA is that irony is a diagnostic assessment it is a test and you've already had exposure to that test the second part is that it does there is online instruction for digital instruction this graphic here shows kind of a the whole package of what your teachers are implementing after school so the orange part is there's three tests that are available for this year. we are really focusing the schools really focusing on the diagnostic assessment what teachers in a normal year can use these other two assessments called standards Mastery and growth monitoring to provide again that data so that I know what the next steps are for each of your children I ready instruction though it does Branch out so the data informs the teachers of the next steps and there's resources that teachers can use Beyond just I ready and I already is not just the test it is the online instruction and some of you some of your children may be participating in the all lines instruction at all and then the green block here is the teacher replied resources so there's a lot of printed resources that the teachers use for their small groupings and then other other instructional needs we're going to go over the dying review it and then we're going to go over to the online instruction so I'm sure you guys had a lot of feelings a lot of feedback based upon that first testing environment couple of things that you need to know is that the diagnostic assessment is a K-12 assessment and really the main thing to understand about that is it doesn't limit your child so if you have a sec greater add your second grader is a genius and your second grader has High School academic skills then the test will take the student all the way up to high school level question that is what we called adaptive nature of the test the temp starts at 4th grade level questions but it's going to adapt up and down depending upon Maria knows so in this example hear starting point at fourth grade and she gets questions correct and then the level of difficulty in the test test becomes more difficult one chicken Iraq after it starts leveling down so it's a combination of actual performance grade level so some of you might have felt like wow why were these questions so difficult while think about the eye test at doctor will take you through that that letter where you're reading off the letters and then at some point your doctor asks you to go to the one that's kind of blurry and the one that's like super blurry and think about the I already died in that manner remember that 50/50 students will get half of the answers correct and Incorrect and that's by Design because what we don't know what I really doesn't know what I really takes into account is not only the question that your child aspirin correctly but also the incorrect question so that we can have an accurate actual performance level so there is there is a reason why the test has some difficult questions and it's designed to be that way so I do know you've seen the test questions some of you might have seen some of these tools here so in the test one one other thing that aside from the difficulty of questions or the question difficulty you're probably may have felt like wow this it's taking so long right out of our questions that students can use this is an example of a question that uses two and then here's an example of a reading question and with this reading question you have the passage here noticed that there's a few tabs here looking at this question though I would say it's probably about a fifth grade question and you can tell that if your child doing a 5th grade question first of all they have to read a selection that is 4 pages long and then they have multiple tabs that they have to navigate and that second tab will have a tribe there and then the answer the question the reason why the i-Ready questions tend to have this type of detail is already was built most common core for the Common Core State Standards are probably very close to 10 years while it was being widely adopted across the United States and it was adopted here in Hawaii in the early 2000 I would take 2012 and what not I really didn't exist before that so because the Common Core State Standards became came before I ready but I really was designing the diagnostic to online instruction and how much standards in mine as well as the questions your students your children might be seen in school so the one thing to remember about the Common Core State Standards is it's asking for a higher level than ever in terms of what they expect from students what to expect from students in terms of Mastery of the standards some of the content that's out there now and what's your children are learning it doesn't even measure up to the things I remember myself learning as a child the difficulties is just at a different different level and then some of you might have gotten the family reports so you know that I already test has a purpose and the purposes that it's going to get data so I'll for those of you who received your family report in this example this is a sample student Danielle Baker you probably saw one bar fix a pulled this is going to show you what the next family reports will show and the ones that come after the middle diagnostic which is going to happen around December and then the end of year diagnostic But Not only would you have that first Mark that first test result you can expect to see family reports after each test result which would result in giving you yourself some updates as far as how well your child's performing so in this example here we have that i-Ready score the first test was taken at the beginning of the school year at 4 this student the placement was approaching grade 5 in math and then what you can see with the subsequent in the middle and the ad you can see the growth that is occurring I'm on the right side here you can kind of see the different areas of math in this case and on the reading report it's going to have the diff don't mean it breaks down math and reading into the specific domains the specific area and just by looking at this sample report you can kind of see that or Danielle here she's approaching grade 5 in the first three domains but then she has a weakness hearing geometry and it says Needs Improvement when I take back to Danielle Freeport and I think back to myself going through school as an elementary school student all the way up to high school math was my thing that was what I was good at but then when I hit high school and that was the first time I was storm success and after that I just stay away from that I think back to them like could if I took the diagnostic that's really good at math but he has a weakness in geometry and I think back to if I could have got to my geometry got filled a bit maybe I would have turned into maybe I would have continued my my preference for math right so this is the family report. that is available for for parents to kind of see how well your your children are doing and it's a good follow-up because you kind of want to know okay they took a test already passed what are the results of this is a Way teachers can communicate to their family there's some questions that came in for sure the first question was does the progress monitoring reassess the child similar to the diagnostic test or is it just assessing if they've mastered the i-Ready lessons they've already completed you're talkin about the my progress on the online instruction I think there is August 20th maybe growth monitoring growth monitoring I want to back up to the slide end up first in this line here I talked about the three tests that are available that your school would normally normally your teachers would assign the test right and I talked all about the diagnostic your school has done a great job cuz it's like it's like business as usual. Just giving out the diagnostic head they're just waiting for the winter one to come out what's great about Moana. It's business as usual what they mean by progress monitoring Mary can you read Kenpachi wants more what is the punishment for child similar to the diagnostic test or is it just assessing if they've mastered the i-Ready lessons they've already that's a great question so I supposed to give a temperature check one thing that the growth monitoring does is that wherever your child placed on the first diagnostic the growth monitoring takes that placement and its it gives questions around that basement but if you have a child that is behind and I'll use that example of third grader who is maybe add a second grade level or maybe first grade level progress monitoring test they took starts at whatever level they started out or they left off at your child placed High the girls monitor our progress monitoring will start the test that high level so what is accepting is something is that it's assessing what kind of growth your child has made individually and the online instruction helps but then it's measuring all of the instructions measuring the instruction that your child received in the virtual session the grade level standards and then the i-Ready online instruction if your child been on it and that contributes as well so it's kind of like a combination of the history it's really measuring that has taken place from that first diagnostic until when your child took that progress monitoring test and it's designed so that you don't have to wait two to three months to for the next agnostic so that's great that has again like I said business as usual and then the next question is how can we how can we access the family report is it through a family account or through our child's teacher it would be through your child's future the other one I was talking about the family report the teacher should you should be sending at home or you might get it during parent-teacher conference. Might be a chance. your teacher saving it for that first off parent-teacher conference thank you thanks for the questions can you keep talking away so I'm glad we know that home testing probably had a bunch of challenges right there's a high probability that the next big diagnostic the long test right the one that robbed the beginning metal at the end and not the progress monitoring although some of these tips can be used for the progress monitoring as well it's probably going to be at home it might be it depends there's so many things you know that's life right now it seems like it's changing every single day every single week right so with that at home test it was unfamiliar I believe the second test is going to be in front of mirror what the teachers feel Elementary has been doing I ready for probably 3 years now and that's first year for the teachers was it's probably the same feeling that you had when you when you did the test at home with your child so keeping in mind that the second test is coming up part of reviewing the diagnostic is all about you know I'm sorry some of the questions you might have but also preparing you for that possibility that that second test the winter one is going to be on home again so the one thing you want to do is as far as the steps go before make sure your earlier about the right their goal is not to get every question it's designed so that you don't get questions you get some of the questions incorrect if you get too many questions correct that the difficulty of the test keeps going higher until it tries to figure out where are you aware of where are you going to struggle in terms of questions that are too hard for you so it's not about you no answering the most correct if that's going to that's going to be not the goal it's not for a letter grade is not for the report card so just remember that and make sure your child remembers that it's okay to see some questions that they're going to encounter some questions that are going to be difficult started the i-Ready test there's always that video where that that character comes out and says it's like trying on that shoe trying on shoe sizes right now they're talking about through the shoe analogy really the thing that I want to emphasize probably that might not have been told in the beginning was the test isn't I'm so if your child is taking about 30 minutes and you can kind of tell that your child is struggling I need to break you can log off and take a break and then if you come back an hour later a day later you can get back on and it will continue on so I'm thinking that might help with the length of the test and how it impacted your child so keep in mind that as long as it works with your future schedule like if your teacher says the second test the winter test if your teacher says that we'd like it completed today think of think of it where you tagged Chuck the test if it's allowable in that day and you can divide that test out if you think that might be in your child's best interest make sure that when they make sure they've got what they need so you probably again done disses in with the first diagnostic friendly reminders a quiet comfortable place to take the test your device is probably ready to go one thing that you may have not done the first time it's for the math part a paper and pencil that you probably figure that out on its own on your own but paper and pencil is perfectly fine when you do the math questions so have that ready for them during diagnostic encourage and support but don't help look at the teachers are relied cuz the one thing about this whole at home setting is that pick up all those hours that are missing the normal school year where your teacher sees your child 5 to 6 hours a day you know basically your teacher is assessing your child throughout the day be on just what this diagnostic test says the teacher is monitoring Behavior monitoring aha moments with each of your children since that's missing there still seems to be a little bit of Reliance on these type of data point so encouraged and but don't help because in the end like I said it's not for a letter grade it's more about what are the next steps it's more about hey meth I need to know whether you have a geometry and it's about responding to that so that your child can be better prepared for the learning to come not only in this year but in in the following years right so you know you're probably place Fallout being a supportive teacher which is absolutely fantastic and you're probably going to be that cheerleader and if they start struggling remember to not help them with the answers you can use encouraging phrases like Lana looks like a hard question remember it's okay if you don't know just try your best right or looks are this is phrases related to you know you can walk away from the test right looks like you could use a quick do you want to finish this question now or when you get back right playing that role of encouraging your child to do their best and then after the diagnostic you can celebrate so that's a diagnostic any question so is the is the goal for the students to at grade level by the end of the year that's a great question that would be their ultimate goal but as far as where I stand I am not your child's teacher so that would be a great question to ask your teacher they're also asking about adjusting the levels of the lesson cuz it's not matching their skills also be a teacher conversation as well and you know Mary Mary's really marries kind of like an expert to sew a lot of these questions that you're asking their great questions and I just kind of different to the school to help you with those concerts if not I think can let us know and then we can kind of look into it and then the other question I'm not exactly sure what it's asking but it says I understand the math approach learning allows students to view song problems in different ways however they're not taught basic simple Edition excetera and are still counting with their fingers or simple problems equations are also unnecessarily confusing when they learn you and then it says and it gets continuation to that is it would be easier for me to explain and give examples verbally so maybe questions on while the students are using Freddy tips on how to help them yeah and that is a great segue into the online instructions so this next the second part of this is really going to show how you can participate in their learning and then also how you can get kind of a a better understanding of what I'm going to say is the new right I mean a lot of math that I Learned was very algorithm in terms of I can give you a good personal example for X to I never knew it was for groups of two frankly when I got to Elementary Ed degree when I was learning to become a teacher and I was working with kids and then I saw these conures come up and I saw this the number chart the hundred chart all these things that I've never learned bath and a certain way of so one thing is that it's a little bit different and how you can support your child in their bath learning and just email every online instruction lesson comes with instruction at the beginning song going to give you a helpful step in identifying when it's the instruction so that you can listen in on you can engage in conversations with your child your way of learning math the heart the challenges that the state standards math to be learn in so many different ways now and that's the biggest difference from comparing you to like I was basically are we learned it back back then okay great questions by the way thank you for asking if I did a session like a few weeks ago and I got no question so it was hard to determine whether of weather on audience was engaged or not so keep asking the question I'm going over the online instruction and instruction the way you can think about it is is that it is personalized for each year student. Children about how to adjust the lesson your teachers the functionality to adjust lesson so definitely because you're playing the role of the teacher at home is what personalized is path for you so if you gave your child some help and maybe the i-Ready data is a little bit higher than where your child is an ultimately. Affects this all blind instruction we're going to go over some of that as well as some tip this is a snapshot of a report that your teacher gets and that's the teachers class there are teacher gets all the time big data and then all the different grade level placement and your teacher uses this data to group students for a small group instruction but this is the way your teacher can personalize at make sure that your chart your children's needs are being met because ultimately like this report says every child is going to have greens and reds on the data helps helps out your teachers with identifying the individual needs I like our fur to myself again I hit that geometry efficiency for all my life until I took geometry High School right so again I'm using that comparison on if I was at a younger student in this day and age it would pop up on this report. geometry but again talking about the personalization right in that class report in that class Eduardo is the highest level there and what's nice as you need I already gave Tom area domain placemats right so you can tell by already replacement that Eduardo is really good at numbers and operations grade 5 and then he used a grade for level in are there three domains for the irony personal irony personalized online instruction takes this data and it's creating a personalized path think about the banner of if you are too have a tutor for your child write your tutor would probably look at the diagnostic data already paid off and then figure out okay what are the next steps so the online instruction is like a pro personalized tutor because based upon your child test results it's going to give a child like a bad word of what Eduardo needs but on the flip side classroom on your teacher might have students who have gaps right who who needs specific areas where they're not at grade level and a nice thing about the already personalized online instruction is it's going to fill in the gaps there and ultimately this is used as a supplement so what your teacher is doing is your teacher at this is a 4th grade example your teachers teaching eicher all the fourth grade standards and then as a supplement at the same time the i-Ready online instruction provides I pair with the opportunity to get what I care specifically mean was that combination of 4th grade standards already online instruction that personalized I don't forget that other small group being a teacher get your FaceTime. Personalized as well I think about it as your problem by Ariana stretching is serving as a kind of like a tutor for your chest before your child so you probably seen it already and if you haven't yet beavers of snapshots of the different types of online instruction so after I'm going to back up a little what's your C always on the top as you're going to see what the lesson is covering so this one is covering letter learning M&T capital and lowercase capital T / case there's always going to be this thing that says either three things instruction practice and quiz so one of the tip his parents can engage with their child in the instruction and the practice it's a wonderful opportunity for you to sit there look at the irony lesson we've like I said earlier we have how far from parent interaction nowadays because parents are sitting there looking and they're calling me out for stuff like like that math question earlier or about stuff that they're saying and they're just showing feet I can get online things like that the practice is a thumbs-up you can you want to you know it's okay to be there around talk to your child and this one here the lesson title and you have instruction instruction some stuff you can you can sit there you can pause the instruction talk to your child about what they're saying there's one that says the lesson it says quiz show quiz is where you want to be hands-off you want your child to independently take that quick and the reason why is your teacher whatever your children do your do their last name your teacher has eyes on it there's reports that are already that can save what has your child done this past week and that's the way that's a data point where your teacher can identify the hard work that your child been doing and whenever it shows that your child has had some difficulty in the lesson as determined by the quiz results and that's an opportunity where your teacher can intervene a normal setting where all of these letters is lots of there being done at school your teachers are looking at the report they're identifying where your child needs extra help so the quiz whenever it says quiz you want it has offer on it the irony is not a grade it's not it's not going to impact the report card this one here instruction thumbs-up quiz of hands off are some math examples play like for me this looks like Connect 4 to me but this is the way that the new math is is being taught very visual a lot of words okay so this is when you're not logged into i-Ready this is what they see so you have you may have some assignments that were assigned by the teacher and then the mypath lessons are well I included the slides and but I realized that while I was showing the other slides my main point was the instruction to winterize to navigate to the top of the screen whenever it says Construction by all means engage with your child is in the instruction whatever it says quiz though try to keep hands off on the quiz remember such an important data point that your teacher is looking got those to see where additional Health can be provided so just like the diagnostic here are some helpful tips keep them motivated the lesson is just like the quiz remember earlier I said that I already was built after Common Core State Standards the test was built with standards in mind the online lessons in life ask for ask for if the standard description was this and the lesson was created with to meet every part of that standard so the lessons can get long so you're the motivator you're the one that going to keep them on track right so keeping them motivated continuing that cheerleader explaining that you know I ready will help them and I'll personally these are a lot of the teachers would have conversations with your child in school encourage them to take each lesson quiz seriously so make sure that when they jump on the the goal is to pass that lesson and what you can remember by the instruction actors in the quiz is that every lesson has it struck shaving at practice embedded or instruction embedded so it's not like they're going to they're there is a module in there that will go over what do you need to learn to be successful on the quiz mistakes are okay for the first time and then help them keep track of their progress what we recommend and you might have a teacher recommendation so basically go with what your teacher your teacher has directed in terms of Diary online if you want to do a little extra you know recommended alcohol to pass lessons per week I would recommend not going any higher than this because unless your teacher has instructed the only reason why is we know that when students do too much it gets overwhelming fatigue so you want this to be kind of like that tutor right you're not going to have that tutor there 5 days a week having them do five days of tutoring weather or whatever it is one to two two to three times a week but what you want to do is what I want to focus in on this regularly review the progress so every lesson has the results and it's under that my progress and in my progress is going to tell you how much time they've spent that week how many lessons they've passed in the school year and the fun lesson straight how many lessons they passed in a once you click completed work you can see how well they did on each lesson and a time to that is what we have called the less than tractors so less than tractors are what teachers would use in the classroom to talk about what they learn and I ready so he's going to put two attachments in the shop and there's going to be two lesson tracker this lesson tracker pretty much would write the title of the last time and if you were going to write this lesson here you would write determine word meanings using prefixes over and under your right that in there and then for your young students you can color all the way up to watch the score by 80% what's good is that this this is it's easy for a child to go on and say okay I'm done after 15 20 30 minutes right that's a bad habit that could form by just having your child go on get off go out and get off this is a way that when they get on and then after they're done this is an action this is a Tracker Where there can be a discussion of how well they did and it also keeps him out focus in terms of continually passing lesson II the same format but then there is one column gear where you can have your child enter what they learned I am looking at my clock only have one minutes I am just going to really so you really quickly about learning games so learning games in under math there's this little thing here called learning games so learning game is is a math game is a bunch of math games it talks to the Diagnostics so it gives your children the right level of learning game that they need and it's just extra math practice remember it talks to the diagnostic right so if your child needs counting and they're struggling with the counting with her hands there are counting games in here under other one of these games play hungry company I'd say so there's these games that are here and just going to give you some quick snapshots of the different games that are here you can tell the different levels this one is an Uber line is fractions integers estimation all these different levels but remember it talks to the diagnostic so it's going to give your child what they need so there's all these learning games that are in there but how you can utilize learning games I would recommend this remember the to pass lesson that is there an online lesson your i-Ready lesson like I said before you do you want to engage with instruction Park this is how I ready lessons during the quiz hands off after the license completed check your child quiz results if you have time to your lesson truckers but learning games is the bonus it's the carry off their learning games with full games are just going to have fun with that I ready is instruction and then they got to take an assessment so really if you gave your child a choice I pretty sure they would pick learning games because it's just interactive game so what you do can do it without to pass lessons age for learning games there as the bonus right if you pass to lessen door with whatever your teacher recommend thing learning games is that care for them that as an insult and then what we want to do is that with your help with all of these resources are available for you already online instruction learning games is that with each test that they can you can see this type of girl Turn Style review any questions that came in yes so the first question is does the length of license depend on how many they are getting correct if they're getting answers trucks in the end faster versus lots of mistakes they have more questions that's a great question the test a diagnostic has an Adaptive nature six question so it doesn't depending upon how the students are doing on their online instruction that would be super cool though in the future that there would be some kind of of that business with the kind of AI with the online instructure there is a finite number and it doesn't really matter it how well does a child does in their online instruction this and that I ready should be aligning the content to meet my child needs should I be concerned if I see my child getting 100% one day and 67% the next day or the opposite I've been seeing a lot of so that data point is really interesting right in the end when you look at a student who is doing a hundred hundred hundred hundred hundred that's a concern but if you have the eyes on that then. concerned that you can go to your teacher and set wow my child doing really great but I have a suspicion that maybe this might be a child if you're noticing hundred sixty-seven 67 have a conversation with your child and you know what could impact that but then again it's good data points and the follow-up question after having a conversation where your child is you know to bring up how do you 67% or whatever the low Pass rates and see what see what kind of conversation you can have with your teacher because if your teacher saw those low Pass rates then that would be messed up kind of thing so it's okay for you bring that up that's ball that you can ask these type of question if they're getting fail fail fail fail fail another conversation so it's all about making sure that you are monitoring your child's progress as well as how they feel when they're taking thyroid eonline instruction and and whatnot I just grabbing all that information so that you know what to do next steps in terms of what topic to discuss with your teachers are there only two attempts to pass the lesson yes so if they don't pass the first time the second time they have an opportunity to pass it will see the whole lesson again I sometimes that's a turn off or student all I got to do this again right but then if you're having a conversation what time and you're doing the lesson tractor and you say okay let's say you got to do this again and they said that might be an opportunity or you must decide okay let me go through this lesson with this with my child and let's really break this down so I can before they take the quiz the second time that I can put in a better place to pass that quiz after that in time you go on to the next lesson but if on the next last time this year child fail fails again earlier I talked about the different domains if you fail fail fail the dog domain was shut off and that's an alert for the teacher to say hey you know what probably we need to pause here and then your teacher will intervene are in this case you are acting as the teacher as well now and you would enter me and I want to add to that so parents are teachers are scheduling small group instruction with the children so I'm that is when the teachers are meeting with individuals or small groups really meet the needs of those students oil filter get the skill and oftentimes they'll look at the the information from i-Ready the one of the things that as parents what you can do at home is you can monitor your child's by looking at your child account and it has there's really helpful information I ready doesn't have a separate parent account but it really does have good information if you were to go in to your child's account and see you know how they're doing there Linda any other questions is there a way to view questions from practice or quizzes I'm so there isn't there isn't a way to view the question questions on the quiz or how well they do on the practice LSU are there with them unfortunately we don't have I think the thing is at that I already is supposed to be independent in a sense that your child will be there are they get everything that they eat and I've had this question come up with a parrot and unfortunately we don't have the functionality existing right now where you can view the questions of the quiz if the quiz has been completed already so the only way that that's available right now is that why they're taking the quiz you can watch and you can see the questions that's the only way you'll be able to determine what they got wrong on the quiz can I see past quiz scores for my child remember that there's this my progress right at the bottom and then when you click my progress it's going to go in this screen what you want to do is Click completed work and then actually Scrolls down and it'll show all the lessons since my child has been since each child may be taking a different test independently on their progress on their progress is i-Ready a signing the test or the teacher if it is I read does a teacher know that the students the more difficult test are you saying that you have are in the in the teacher's classroom where their students at different bubbles are you saying us a question being asked if if the child how does a teacher going with what kind of level the students are taking I'm not sure if you can't type that question can you put in the clarification into the Q&A please thank you and when I get that I'll let you know the last question is if my child is not making the grade level in the diagnostic he or she feeling like I said earlier that the irony does not impact their their grades their report cards is just really trying to identify where what it does for your teachers if so identify your child's strengths and weaknesses and the next steps is what's more important in terms of if your child is behind your teachers are very active in knowing that data and taking the next steps so I mean it's kind of a difficult question but probably a conversation.
